🎤 Michael Stipe Turns 65 – The Voice of a Generation

Posted by Ken at Birdland Music

It’s January 4th, and here at Birdland Music, we’re raising a coffee mug (and maybe spinning Automatic for the People) to celebrate one of the most distinct and influential voices in rock history — Michael Stipe, who turns 65 today!

As the frontman of R.E.M., Stipe didn’t just sing — he defined an era. With that unmistakable voice, cryptic lyrics, and quiet charisma, he helped turn an Athens, Georgia college-rock band into one of the biggest and most respected acts on the planet.

From “Radio Free Europe” to “Losing My Religion,” Stipe showed us that you didn’t need to scream to make a statement. His lyrics made you think, his stage presence made you feel, and his artistic vision gave R.E.M. its soul.

Beyond the band, Michael Stipe has continued to explore visual art, photography, and activism — always pushing creative boundaries. He’s a true artist in every sense of the word.

At 65, he remains a voice not just of the past, but of what’s possible in music when you stay true to your own rhythm.

Swing by Birdland Music this week — we’ve got R.E.M. vinyl, some rare solo appearances, and plenty of stories to share about how these songs shaped our lives.

Happy Birthday, Michael. Thanks for reminding us that it’s okay to be a little mysterious — and a lot meaningful.

Stay curious,
Ken
